Likes: “Being an adult”, freedom of movement, scowling, sarcasm Dislikes: Her father, being treated like a child, feeling guilty
Personality: On the surface, Lachan is serious to a fault. She prides herself on being an adult and being more mature than others, and she is almost too insistent on that quality. At heart, however, she has a tendency to be a bit of a capricious terror.
Sarcastic in humor and confusing in affection, she is a bit of a frustrating mystery. She is seemingly hostile toward people as she grows to like them, and it takes her a while to truly open up and be friendly (and even that doesn't guarantee that she'll stop behaving as though she has to criticize you). In addition, despite her self-proclaimed maturity (which is not entirely a lie), she has many childish moments. She is frequently found doing things simply because they are contrary to what her father has asked of her, as she has a rather contentious relationship with him.
This isn't to say that her only motivation in life is that of disobeying her parent, of course—there are much deeper roots where that relationship is concerned—but it does tend to contribute to her somewhat rebellious reputation in society. She is well aware that most respectable people tend to shy away from her because she is somewhat volatile, but she believes that her own freedom to act as she wishes is more important than her social standing. She isn't a madwoman—she is actually fairly respectful to people who aren't her father—but her refusal to commit to social norms tends to make people uncomfortable.
Biography: The daughter of a Templar and a runaway mother, Lachan's upbringing was somewhat tempestuous. Lachan's mother was Jewish, arranged into a marriage with a Muslim man, Hamza bin Ahmad, who became a high ranking Templar and converted to Christianity. He bade his young wife to join him in conversion, and after she reluctantly agreed, the two only had a few short years together before she ran away from the marriage, leaving two young children for Lachan's father to raise. As such, while Lachan's brother Nazif remembers their parents' unhappy marriage well, Lachan had only just been born when her mother left and so did not remember much about her.
Hamza bin Ahmad was not well equipped to be a father, particularly so on his own. He demanded his children meet his high expectations, and while Nazif was willing to put up with (or ignore) his father's wishes peacefully, Lachan resorted to behaving antagonistically. She began to idolize her lost mother as a brilliant, kind woman—a role model of freedom of action and an appropriate counterpoint to her strict father. She spent many years grudgingly doing as her father asked before beginning to act of her own volition. She got a job weaving with other women; she made such a nuisance of herself that any marriages other families tried to arrange went sour; eventually she started openly arguing with her father and being contrary on purpose. It wasn't so much that she completely hated him—she was mainly tired of failing to meet his tremendous expectations and so decided that she would instead ignore the expectations altogether.
Things finally came to a head when her father retired from the Templars and began demanding that Nazif carry on his legacy and join the Templars himself. Only interested in smithing, Nazif had an easy time ignoring these demands. Lachan, however, grew tired of the man lamenting about his lost legacy and, one day, was so fed up with his complaining that she went and insisted on being a part of the Templars herself. She had her father's intimidating reputation to back her up.
